Bayer (Monsanto) Sucks
Bayer to pay $1.5 billion in recent settlement over Glyphosate causing NHL
Bayer- who bought out Monsanto for $63 billion in 2018- was ordered on Friday to pay $1.5 billion in damages to three individuals who accused Monsanto’s golden goose product “Roundup” of causing their non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This adds to the already massive amount of money ($11 billion) Monsanto was ordered to pay before being purchased by Bayer. The $11 billion accounts for about 80% of all pending Roundup cases but still roughly 40,000 active lawsuits remain.
It was really no surprise Bayer made a successful pass at acquiring Monsanto. For starters, purchasing Monsanto and deleting the name is an attempt to wash out the negative relation associated with the Monsanto brand overall. Many people are beginning to realize the negative health impacts correlated to exposure to herbicides and genetically modified food. Agriculture is already dominated by a few large companies so it makes sense that the second largest pesticide producer in the world (Bayer) would want to purchase the worlds largest seed company (Monsanto). Consolidation is the way to dominate the agricultural industry. To me, it makes sense simply because the food is made toxic by Bayer’s chemicals (in the form of “-icides” and genetic modification) which makes us sick through their slow, insidious mechanisms of toxicity. Bayer then turns around and offers us a solution to these ailments through their “medicines” which are also chemically synthesised (from things like petroleum and coal tar). Create the problem on the front end and conveniently have the solution ready to go on the back end. Can’t beat the self licking ice cream cone technique. Even so, Bayer didnt have to buy Monsanto to accomplish that. They were already producing chemicals for both medicinal and agricultural use. This essentially just gives Bayer more power through buying out and squashing its competitor. We will see if Bayer’s move pays dividends but in light of this recent verdict and the subsequent drop in their stock of 19% only time will tell.
